Sources and how we use them

Six primary documents, each published by the person or company making the argument, each dated.

Where we quote somebody, the quotation is short, in quotation marks, and carries the venue and the month. Where a figure appears, it carries who measured it and when. Where a lab’s own number and an independent one disagree, both appear and we name the difference.

Primary documents worth reading yourself

Machines of Loving Grace - Dario Amodei, October 2024The origin of the “country of geniuses in a datacenter” framing, and of his rejection of the term AGI.
Reflections - Sam Altman, January 2025“We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it.”
The Gentle Singularity - Sam Altman, June 2025Notable for what it avoids: year-by-year capability milestones in place of any AGI threshold.
Towards Humanist Superintelligence - Microsoft AI, November 2025Suleyman’s reframing, and his move away from giving dates.
The Adolescence of Technology - Dario Amodei, January 2026The current statement of his position.
A Framework for Frontier AI - Demis Hassabis, July 2026“Probably only a few short years away”, with his definition restated in the same sentence.

What we left out

Several widely repeated quotations do not appear anywhere on this site because we could not establish where or when they were said. One of them would have been the most striking line on the page. It is still not here.

We also exclude figures from the cluster of low-quality sites that generate near-identical AI news pages with invented detail. If a number appears here, it came from the organisation that produced it.
